Venus Bowler S/S Button Down Shirt
The Venus Bowler is inspired from open collar style shirts popular in the sub-tropical climates of Southeast Asia - ours is constructed with the same satin used on Japanese "sukajan" souvenir jackets, originally made popular by American WWII GI's returning from the Pacific theatre. The satin gives the shirt a rich, heavy hand and beautiful drape, which we accented with a ruched back panel. The custom embroidery on the front is a blossoming venus flytrap, an unfamiliar sight for a familiar object. While the plant has an aggressive stereotype, they are also quite delicate and require ideal environments (or otherwise careful care). The design was chosen for its illustration of the inescapable tension and cycle between strength and weakness. Specific to the season’s theme, the graphic also suggests the haunting paradox of violence and beauty. The embroidery is not a single reflected image—indeed each plant has been illustrated separately and the left and right sides are unique in each one's artistic detail.
